From 9th October to 10th November, Reading International Festival will 

celebrate Reading’s diverse communities and action groups. The programme highlights the many international activities, twinning links and solidarity in Reading. The theme highlighted this year is: Unite and Act for Human Survival.

It aims to empower and create:

  • A world where we live in peace, without divisions and violence
  • A world that protects all human rights
  • A world that protects our environment and planet
  • An equitable world & economic system that serves all.

The Festival also includes events to celebrate Black History Month.

We are delighted to be part of this year festival and we'll join fellow BAFTS members Lanka Kade, Weaving Hope, Fair to Trade and Just Trade on Thursday 9th November for the event: 'This Christmas, don't just buy! Buy Just'

6:30pm The World Shop, 35-39 London St, RG1 4PS.

Hear stories of fair trade producers and have a chance to browse new ranges of toys from Sri Lanka by Lanka Kade and Weaving Hope, Christmas decorations from Kashmir and Palestine by Fair to Trade, accessories from Cambodia by Lost in Samsara, jewellery from India and Peru by Just Trade London. Sample fair trade wine and snacks will be provided!

Also don't miss this special event on Friday 20 October:

Slavery, Free Labour & Fair Trade 7.30pm Dr Joseph Yannielli of Aston University will explore how society has been grappling with the issue of fair trade since early industrialisation. He will be joined by two of his students, Samriti Hans and Safiah Al-Shatheli. They will examine slavery in Reading, the role of enslaved labour in the production of cotton, sugar and chocolate, and early campaigns for free labour and human rights.
